Is fat bad for you?

Have you ever been caught believing in the common myth that all fats are bad? Evidence shows that not all fats are bad, in fact some can benefit you while others can really harm you, if taken in large amounts. Trans fats are considered the worst type of fat. Trans fats are normal healthy fats that have been hydrogenated by artificial means, to increase its density or life. These fats drastically increase levels of bad cholesterol and increases the risk of heart disease. These fats should be avoided or removed from your diet. Some common foods that contain high levels of trans fat include:

  • Fried items
  • Pie crusts
  • Stick margarine
  • Ready-to-use frosting
  • Coffee creamers
  • Some microwave popcorn and frozen pizza
  • Some cakes, crackers and cookies

Saturated fats are fats that appear in solid form in room temperature. These are found in meat and some oils. These fats are not considered as bad as trans fat, but should be kept to a minimum as it can also increase levels of bad cholesterol and the risk of heart disease, if taken in large amounts. Common foods that contain high levels of saturated fat include:

  • High-fat cheeses
  • High-fat cuts of meat
  • Whole-fat milk, cream and ice cream
  • Butter
  • Palm and coconut oils

Unsaturated fats are the fats that doctors recommend take majority of your fat content. These fats are found in liquid form in room temperature, and originate mainly from vegetables and nuts. These do not link to increases in cholesterol or heart disease, which therefore have the most benefits for the body.  Foods that contain high levels of unsaturated fats include:

  • Olive oil
  • Avocados
  • Many nuts
  • Soybean oil and corn oil
  • Some fish
